Over the years we’ve all heard the jokes about British autos marking their territory (leaking oil). Many times I’ve heard “ It’s British, it’s supposed to leak”.

In reality there are solutions available for a leaking engine, transmission or differential. The question is how committed are you to correct these leaks.  The first step is to get the car on jack stands (or a lift if you are lucky) so you can get under the car to make an evaluation. Side covers (if so equipped) are bad about leaking and can release large amounts of oil. Seal replacement often requires the removal of carburetors and exhaust manifold. The timing chain cover seal (around crankshaft) will leak and as you drive the oil will disperse to the rear of the car (sometimes making a determination of leak sources difficult). Oil pan gaskets can be at fault, sometimes requiring engine removal to correct. An easier fix is a leaking oil filter housing or oil pump (if externally mounted). The rear engine seal can leak and requires engine removal to correct. Transmissions will leak from the drain plug (drain oil and use Teflon tape on threads), from the front pilot shaft seal (remove transmission), from the speedometer drive pinion, or from the rear transmission seal. The rear axle will leak from the  front pinion seal, from the gasket between the case and cover,  from the drain plug, or from the half shaft seals (at the rear wheels).

There are other places your car can leak but these are the main places to look. Hopefully you will be able to tighten up the leaking points without major disassembly.
